philosophy
I love making things that are cool and that are different from things that already exist. I get a kick out of solving problems, and working through complex puzzles. The world is many shades of grey, not black and white. Information is the heartbeat of democracy. Amazing things happen when people from different backgrounds come together. Technology should be used to enrich and empower our world, not destroy it. Unfettered growth is not something corporations should be striving for. A great product or service, fulfilled employees, and a commitment to a healthy planet are enough. Markets are imperfect. A pure meritocracy does not exist anywhere. Hard work pays off, but some must work harder than others. Innovate to change the world, not to be innovative.
bio
I’m a first-gen Canadian who moved to Toronto from Poland as a teeny kid. My world has always been a complex mix of cultural dualities. I received my PhD from Toronto Metropolitan University, and my BA and MA from the University of Toronto.
My multi-award winning PhD research examined the realties of entrepreneurship in the digital-first sector and provided the first benchmark analysis of gender and race across key creative roles in Canadian scripted web series. For this, I was awarded the Ryerson Gold Medal, and the Communication and Culture Dissertation Prize and I’ve shared this work all over the world. You can check it out here. I love writing about and dissecting the dynamics of power in the media, and how identity intersects with issues like economics, policy, politics, and opportunity. This theme runs through my creative and more scholarly writing.
Aside from running my company, Pink Moon Studio with my incredible partners, I’m an Assistant Professor at Ontario Tech University. We’re striving for building a community of creative excellence in the East. Prior to this, I led the Transmedia Zone, a media innovation incubator at Toronto Metropolitan University. This is a genuinely amazing community of inspiring creative innovators, and it was such a privilege to have had a hand in shaping it.
Currently, I sit on the board of directors of the Independent Production Fund, and I’m the former president of the Web Series Canada.
I speak at, host and lead a lot of events, including design thinking workshops, fireside chats, panels, and guest talks. Connect with me to learn more.
